Cultural Sensitivity Training Tackles Cultural Barriers In and Out of the Classroom

Somali Family Service (SFS) held a Cultural Awareness & Sensitivity Training for School Staff at Horace Mann Middle School on May 27th and 28th. The workshops focused on informing school staff on Somali culture and how it might impact students in and outside of the classroom. A diverse group of teachers, social workers, and other school staff were in attendance. The workshops included presentations and ongoing discourse between the speakers and the audience.
Somali Family Service aims to tackle some of the cultural barriers that contribute to the gap found in health care access and delivery of care. Understanding the cultural health beliefs and experiences of this diverse population of Somali patients is crucial to providing culturally competent care. On Thursday, May 21, 2015 we will hosting our 2nd Annual Health Summit.
San Diego Youth Opportunity Pathways Initiative (PATHWAYS) provides personalized support for students and youth to increase their engagement and persistence in completing an educational program and receive job readiness training, exposure to post-secondary education, training and employment options.
NAASD’s motto of “Serving Communities, Connecting People,” expresses its goal of bringing together Arab Americans in collaboration with SFS, and in service to diverse communities. Volunteers will learn more about farming and how this contributes to the well being and lives of refugees and new Americans.
