POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED

The goal of this position is to successfully expand employment related-services at Somali Family Service.

The VISTA member will conduct employment-related workshops; connect clients with employment resources and other services; and assist with special events planning and grant writing. Specific assignments include:

  • Creating flyers and conduct outreach in the community, including attending networking events, to promote employment workshops.
  • Disseminating information through email and written forms of communication to promote employment workshops and resources.
  • Working with Somali Family Service’s case managers to develop employment curriculum to ensure that participants are provided with additional resources.
  • Conducting workshops on the following topics; financial literacy, money management, work-readiness, and communication.
  • Working to develop a vocational ESL program for the target population.
  • Training a community volunteer and staff member on the vocational ESL program.
  • Identifying job resources including job openings and on-the job trainings applicable to Somali Family Service’s clients, and work with Somali Family Service’s staff to disseminate this information to clients.
  • Helping Somali Family Service to plan and host a job fair specifically targeting their clients.
  • Helping solicit sponsorships for major events.
  • Providing marketing and promotional support to marketing committee.
  • Reviewing grant guidelines, conduct grant research, review proposals, draft support letters, and ensure all required documents are submitted.

Qualifications:

  • Strong candidates will have a Bachelor’s Degree
  • Demonstrated interest in working with underserved and marginalized communities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent research and analytical skills
  • Excellent organizational, time-management, follow-up, and administrative skills
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and as a part of a team in a deadline-driven environment
  • Strong computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite (emphasis on Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Experience with employment-related programs
  • Grant/proposal writing experience preferred
  • Previous experience in a non-profit environment preferred
  • Bilingual in Somali preferred.
  • Local candidates preferred.

BENEFITS:

  • Annual living allowance of about $15,000.
  • A choice between an Education Award of $5,775 or End-of-Service Stipend of $1,500 at the completion of service
